The Role of Women in Economic Development: Insights from Akosua Manu

Women's Contributions to Economic Growth

Akosua Manu, an aide to the New Patriotic Party flagbearer, recently emphasized the pivotal role women play in driving economic growth across Africa. According to Ms. Manu, women own or manage nearly a third of small and medium enterprises on the continent. Despite facing significant challenges, women continue to exhibit remarkable resilience and ingenuity, particularly in environments where access to financial services is limited.

Challenges in Financing Women-Led Businesses

Ms. Manu highlighted a significant issue: the financing gap for women-led businesses in Africa, which exceeds $40 billion. She described this gap as a major constraint on the continent's economic transformation. In Ghana, although women constitute about 51 percent of the population and many are economically active, access to funding remains a key challenge.

Economic Impact of Women’s Income

“When women earn income, up to 90 percent is reinvested into family welfare, education, and community development," Ms. Manu stated. This reinvestment underscores the profound impact that empowering women can have on society at large.

Empowerment Through Financial Solutions

Empowering women through targeted financial solutions and partnerships is essential for unlocking broader economic growth and national development. Ms. Manu urged the John Dramani Mahama administration to continue supporting initiatives like the One District One Factory (1D1F), introduced by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration. This initiative could help address unemployment and absorb economic shocks, such as the tomato export ban by Burkina Faso.

Addressing the Tomato Export Ban

Ms. Manu expressed concern over the tomato export ban by Burkina Faso, which she considers a national security threat. She stressed that Ghana has not yet achieved self-sufficiency in tomato production. "Tomatoes are essential for food preparation, and a shortage could therefore create a national security crisis," she noted.

In conclusion, Ms. Manu’s insights highlight the necessity of supporting and empowering women entrepreneurs to drive economic growth and address national challenges in Ghana and across Africa.
