Namibia signs major agreements with China in infrastructure, mining and energy sectors

In a significant boost to bilateral ties, Namibia and China have signed eight cooperation agreements during Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s state visit to China.

The pacts focus heavily on infrastructure development, mining (with emphasis on critical and green minerals such as uranium, lithium, and rare earths), energy (including potential oil and clean energy collaboration), agriculture, and broader economic partnership.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Nandi-Ndaitwah elevated relations to a "China-Namibia Community of Shared Future in the New Era." China expressed willingness to deepen cooperation in infrastructure construction, energy, minerals, education, youth, and science & technology.

Key highlights include:

- A framework agreement on economic partnership.

- Strengthened collaboration on green minerals and value addition.

- Potential for Chinese involvement in Namibia’s emerging oil sector (Namibia could become Africa’s fourth-largest oil producer by 2030).

The visit, Nandi-Ndaitwah’s first major international trip since taking office, included stops in Guangdong, Chengdu, and Beijing, with a strong emphasis on local processing of raw materials, technology transfer, manufacturing, and job creation in Namibia.

This development underscores China’s continued strategic engagement in Africa and Namibia’s push for industrialization and sustainable resource development.
