Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney is highly optimistic about the new midfield being built by the club ahead of the new football season in Europe.

The former England international is hopeful that they will respond when they eventually get into their grove.

Rooney, have been speaking on the new partnership.

Wayne Rooney on Manchester United’s midfield rebuild:

“If there was one major lesson from the France vs Spain game, it’s that you don’t build a truly elite midfield around runners. You build it around technicians.

Tchouaméni, Koné and Rabiot are all very good midfielders in their own right, but none of them possesses the all-round influence Paul Pogba had at his best.

No matter how talented your attack is, you still need midfielders capable of dictating the tempo, progressing play, and creating from deep.

Technical quality beats pure athleticism more often than not.

That’s one of the reasons I’m becoming more convinced by the direction Manchester United are taking.

Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans are pass-first midfielders. They want the ball, they’re comfortable under pressure, and they help control the tempo of a game.

Midfields like that give you control, and control is what wins the biggest games.

Add one more elite technician at defensive midfield, and suddenly the entire midfield rebuild starts to make a lot more sense.”
