Brazilian icon Neymar Jr has announced his retirement from international football with immediate effect.
His last appearance for the Selecao at the international stage was at the recently ended FIFA World Cup in North America.
Neymar Jr, played in the last 16 tie against Norway which Brazil lost 2-1 with the forward getting the consolation for the five-time world champions.
"My story with the Brazil national team is over. I always fought to defend the colours of this shirt. But I don't want to play anymore,"Neymar Jr said in a statement.
In all, he made 130 appearances for the Brazil national team, scoring 80 goals in the process.
His 80 goals, makes him Brazil's all-time leading goal scorer at senior level in men's football.
Neymar Jr, helped Brazil win Olympic gold at the 2016 Games in Rio.
Earlier, he was part of the Brazil national team that won the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2013.
Neymar Jr is expected to continue playing at club level were he is currently on the books of Brazilian local side Santos in the top-flight league.
