US Deports Eight People 'of African Origin' to Uganda

In a significant development under a migration deal signed last year, the United States has deported eight individuals from various African countries to Uganda. This marks the first instance of such a transfer under the agreement, which designates Uganda as a safe third country for migrants unable to return to their home countries for reasons such as persecution.

Arrival in Uganda.

The group arrived in Uganda on Wednesday after a US judge approved their cases, according to a statement from Uganda's foreign ministry. The ministry highlighted the agreement with the US, which allows Uganda to serve as a haven for individuals facing challenges in returning to their countries of origin.

Controversy and Legal Challenge.

The Uganda Law Society has voiced strong opposition to these deportations, arguing that the individuals were subjected to an "undignified, harrowing and dehumanising process." The organization has condemned the deportations as illegal and intends to challenge the process in court. This move reflects broader concerns about the treatment of migrants and the implications of such international agreements.

US Immigration Policy.

Since President Donald Trump took office in January, his administration has adopted a stringent approach toward immigration, resulting in the deportation of dozens of individuals to third countries. This policy has sparked significant debate and criticism from various human rights groups and legal organizations.

Awaiting Official Comments.

While the BBC has reached out to the US Department of Homeland Security for a comment on the deportations, there has been no response yet. The situation continues to unfold, with potential legal challenges on the horizon as the ramifications of this migration deal are evaluated by both legal experts and human rights advocates.
