In a significant development for Tunisia's labor movement, 67-year-old education unionist Slaheddine Selmi has been elected as the head of the influential Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT). His election marks a new chapter for the union, with his leadership role in the political landscape remaining uncertain.

Vision for UGTT.

Selmi, who hails from Kairouan and has been deeply involved with the primary education union, presented himself as a candidate of continuity and stability. He is well-regarded for his familiarity with the UGTT's inner workings and is seen as a figure acceptable to various factions within the union.

In his initial remarks to the Tunisian media on Saturday, March 28, 2026, Selmi emphasized the need to restore social dialogue with the government, which has been fractured in recent months. He has set two main priorities for his tenure: enhancing transparency within the union and safeguarding UGTT's independence from political manipulation.

Challenges Ahead.

Selmi faces a daunting task ahead, as he must navigate deep internal divisions that prompted the union to hold its elective congress a year ahead of schedule. Additionally, he must manage the UGTT’s strained relations with the executive power, ensuring that the union maintains its influential role in Tunisia's socio-political landscape.

A Legacy of Leadership.

Selmi follows in the footsteps of Noureddine Tabboubi, who has led the UGTT since 2017. The union, under Tabboubi's leadership, was part of a quartet that received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2015 for their pivotal role in Tunisia's democratic transition. Tabboubi, speaking on Mosaique FM, indicated that his decision to continue as the union's leader was in response to the majority wishes of the union's administrative council members.

Selmi’s election as the head of UGTT is a significant moment for the union and the country, as it seeks to continue its legacy of advocating for workers' rights while navigating the complex political landscape of Tunisia.
