The FIFA World Cup was created by a devout Catholic

The FIFA World Cup, the most watched sporting event on the planet, owes its existence to a man whose life was deeply shaped by his Catholic faith.

Born in 1873 in rural France, Jules Rimet was raised in a devout Catholic family.

Inspired by Pope Leo XIII’s encyclical *Rerum Novarum*, which highlighted the dignity of every person and concern for the poor, Rimet began charitable work in Paris as a teenager.

In 1897, he founded the Red Star Football Club, welcoming players from all walks of life and promoting the idea that football, like the Church, should be open to everyone.

During World War I, he served as a military officer and received the Croix de Guerre for bravery.

The horrors of war strengthened his belief that sport could unite nations and provide a peaceful alternative to conflict.

Elected FIFA president in 1921, Rimet led the organization for more than 30 years.

His vision became reality when the inaugural FIFA World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930.

In recognition of his efforts to foster international friendship and peace through sport, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1956.
