Humanitarian Crisis: Sudanese Refugees in the Central African Republic

The humanitarian crisis in the Central African Republic (CAR) is reaching alarming levels, exacerbated by the influx of Sudanese refugees fleeing war. As conflicts rage on, the situation in CAR remains dire and largely overlooked by international media and aid organizations.

Current Situation.

Despite a relative decline in global attention, the humanitarian needs in CAR are severe. A staggering 2.3 million people—35 percent of the country's population—are living in extreme vulnerability. The challenges faced by these individuals extend beyond the capacity of humanitarian aid alone.

The situation is further aggravated by ongoing conflicts, epidemics, and climate-related shocks, which continue to serve as root causes of vulnerability. These factors not only drive the need for assistance but also contribute to regional instability. Without renewed visibility, solidarity, and political engagement, this silent crisis risks worsening and destabilizing the region.

Impact of Sudanese Refugees.

The war in Sudan has triggered significant population movements into CAR, particularly affecting areas like Birao in the Vakaga Prefecture. As of March 2026, CAR hosts 35,048 Sudanese refugees, with the population of Birao doubling since the influx began. This has strained already scarce resources and put immense pressure on local communities.

Alarmingly, over 120 humanitarian bases belonging to 60 organizations have been closed since 2025 due to underfunding. This includes six bases in Vakaga, which are home to 62 percent of the Sudanese refugee population.

The Need for Immediate Action.

Without immediate, robust, sustainable, targeted, and flexible support, CAR risks a deepening humanitarian emergency. This could have severe implications not only for the country but also for the wider region, potentially undermining peace and stability.

Stories of Resilience.

Despite these overwhelming challenges, stories of resilience and hope emerge. Fatna Saleh Youssouf, a single mother who lost her leg in an explosion during the war in Sudan, exemplifies the strength and determination of many Sudanese refugees. With support from humanitarian organizations, she now sells doughnuts to provide for herself and her child. Her story is a beacon of hope, embodying the resilience of thousands who continue to persevere in the face of adversity.

The humanitarian situation in the Central African Republic demands urgent attention and action. International communities must prioritize this crisis, providing the necessary resources and support to avert a deeper emergency. The resilience of individuals like Fatna underscores the importance of sustained humanitarian efforts to foster hope and rebuild lives in CAR and the region.
