In a tragic event, a pastor has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter following the drowning of a man during a baptism ceremony in Birmingham. Cheryl Bartley, aged 48, faces one count of gross negligence manslaughter related to her role in the unfortunate incident.

The charge stems from the death of 61-year-old Robert Smith, who tragically drowned at a residence on Slade Road in Erdington on October 8, 2023. Mr. Smith, who hailed from Brixton in south London, lost his life during what was meant to be a sacred ceremony.

Legal Proceedings.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has confirmed the charge against Bartley. Malcolm McHaffie, Head of the CPS’s Special Crime Division, emphasized the careful consideration that prosecutors have given to ensure there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to court. He reiterated the importance of pursuing criminal proceedings in the public interest.

McHaffie stated: “Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring this case to court and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings.” He also highlighted the cooperation with West Midlands Police during their investigation.

Fair Trial and Media Caution.

The CPS has urged caution regarding the discussion of the case, stressing the importance of ensuring a fair trial for Bartley. McHaffie reminded the public and media: “It is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.

Upcoming Court Appearance.

Cheryl Bartley, who resides in Erdington, is scheduled to appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, May 14. As the legal process unfolds, it remains crucial for all involved to respect the judicial system's integrity and allow for a just examination of the case.
