The Nigeria Police Force has extradited a Chinese national, Xu Qing, to face justice in China over his alleged role in a massive $245 million fraud scheme, marking a significant step in the fight against international financial crimes.
The operation was carried out through the Nigeria Police Force in collaboration with INTERPOL via its National Central Bureau in Abuja. Authorities confirmed that the suspect was arrested in Nigeria after being tracked for his alleged involvement in a large-scale Ponzi scheme targeting unsuspecting investors.
Investigators say Xu Qing is accused of orchestrating an “illegal absorption of public deposits” scheme, a form of financial fraud where individuals are persuaded to invest funds with promises of unusually high returns. Like most Ponzi operations, the scheme allegedly relied on funds from new investors to pay earlier participants, eventually collapsing and leaving victims with heavy losses.
Following his arrest, Nigerian authorities worked closely with their Chinese counterparts to ensure a smooth extradition process. He was subsequently repatriated to the People’s Republic of China, where he is expected to stand trial.
The successful extradition underscores Nigeria’s increasing commitment to tackling cross-border crimes and strengthening international policing partnerships. It also sends a clear signal that the country will not serve as a refuge for individuals accused of large-scale financial wrongdoing.
Security experts note that such cooperation between nations is becoming more critical as fraud networks grow more sophisticated and global in reach.
