New Features in iOS 26.5 and iOS 27.
Apple is continually innovating, and the upcoming releases of iOS 26.5 and iOS 27 are no exception. While iOS 26.5 is a minor update, it lays the groundwork for significant changes expected in iOS 27. Here’s a look at what to expect from these updates.
iOS 26.5 Features
End-to-End Encryption for RCS.
A notable introduction in iOS 26.5 is the end-to-end encryption for Rich Communication Services (RCS) in the Messages app. This feature aims to enhance security by ensuring that messages exchanged between iOS 26.5 and Android devices are encrypted, preventing interception by third parties. While tested in the iOS 26.4 beta, it was not included in the final release. It remains to be seen if this feature will launch with iOS 26.5 or return during the iOS 27 cycle.
Ads in Apple Maps.
Apple is also introducing ads in the Apple Maps app for iPhone and iPad users in the U.S. and Canada. Businesses will be able to place ads in search results and a new "Suggested Places" section. These ads will appear based on relevance and user activity, similar to those in the App Store. Importantly, Apple assures users that their location and ads interaction data will remain private and unlinked to their Apple Account.
Extended Feature Support.
In compliance with the Digital Markets Act in the EU, iOS 26.5 will extend iPhone features like notifications, Live Activities, and AirPods-like pairing to third-party smartwatches and headphones.
iOS 27 Features
Siri Revamp.
iOS 27 is set to introduce a more personalized version of Siri. This revamped Siri will understand personal context, have on-screen awareness, and offer deeper per-app controls. For instance, users could ask Siri about personal plans by integrating information from apps like Mail and Messages.
Siri App and Extensions.
The update will feature a dedicated Siri app with chatbot functionality and conversation history. Additionally, users will have the option to access third-party chatbots, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, through an "Extensions" feature.
5G Satellite Internet Connectivity
iOS 27 may support 5G satellite internet connectivity, likely limited to the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models with Apple's next-generation C2 modem. This could include features like Apple Maps via satellite and the ability to send and receive photos in Messages via satellite.
Quality and Performance Focus.
Similar to Mac OS X Snow Leopard, iOS 27 will emphasize quality and performance improvements. This includes bug fixes, stability enhancements, and Liquid Glass design improvements. Apple is reportedly working on an updated iPhone keyboard with advanced autocorrect features, providing alternative word suggestions akin to Grammarly.
Liquid Glass Design.
While major design overhauls are not expected, iOS 27 might include a Liquid Glass slider for adjusting interface opacity, enhancing user customization.
These features highlight Apple's commitment to enhancing user experience through security, personalization, and performance improvements. Keep an eye out for the official releases to explore these updates firsthand.
