A French Muslim apologetics group has expressed concern over the renewed enthusiasm surrounding Catholicism during Pope Leo XIV’s historic visit to France.
Miséricorde pour l’Humanité France, a group focused on Islamic apologetics and engagement with non-Muslims, posted on September 25 that it was saddened by the enthusiasm surrounding Catholicism.
The group predicted: “In 45 years, France will become Catholic again, and we will be left with nothing but our tears.”
The group also acknowledged the organizational strength and determination of Catholics, describing them as formidable theological opponents.
It specifically pointed to the growing influence of American Catholics and what it sees as a broader Catholic resurgence in Western Europe.
The comments come amid signs of renewed Catholic interest in France. More than 13,000 adults were baptized Catholic at Easter 2026, with young adults making up a significant portion of new converts.
Pope Leo’s September visit also drew enormous crowds, including 80,000 young people at the Stade de France and hundreds of thousands for the open-air Mass in Paris.
Interestingly, France's main Muslim representative body, the French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM), took a very different public tone, welcoming Pope Leo's visit and praising his messages about human dignity, peace, fraternity and respect.
A nation that many once considered “post-Christian” is seeing young people rediscover the faith of their ancestors.
