Defence Ministry Denies Claims of Military Land Deal with Ibrahim Mahama
Allegations and Denial.
The Deputy Defence Minister, Ernest Brogya Genfi, has firmly denied reports suggesting that military lands were transferred to Ibrahim Mahama, brother of President John Dramani Mahama. Genfi dismissed these allegations as “false and malicious” in a Facebook post on Wednesday, 29 April. He urged the public to disregard this misinformation, emphasizing that the claims have no basis in reality.
Context of the Project.
Genfi explained that the project in question is a redevelopment initiative by the Ghana Armed Forces. It aims to replace the aging infrastructure at Burma Camp, which dates back to the colonial era and is currently in a dilapidated state. The redevelopment is necessary to ensure suitable living conditions for military personnel.
Ibrahim Mahama's Contribution.
As part of the project, Ibrahim Mahama, who is the chief executive of Dzata Group Holding Limited, has made a substantial financial contribution. He donated 120 million cedis to fund the construction of 10 housing blocks, each comprising 16 units. This donation is part of a self-help housing initiative designed to improve accommodation for military personnel.
Fundraising and Support.
The funds were announced during a fundraising luncheon at the Ghana Military Academy. The event was chaired by veteran businessman Sam Jonah and attended by corporate leaders and partners of the armed forces. Genfi highlighted that Mahama's contribution reflects an act of patriotism and will significantly enhance the welfare of soldiers.
Public Scrutiny and Clarification.
This clarification from the Deputy Defence Minister comes amid increased public scrutiny regarding the use of state lands and concerns over political favoritism in development projects. Genfi assured that the initiative is transparent and focused on improving the living standards of military personnel, rather than serving personal or political interests.
