South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has died from “a brief and sudden illness,” his office confirmed.

Graham, who turned 71 last week, was seeking a fifth Senate term this fall.

First elected in 2002, he served for more than two decades and chaired both the Senate Judiciary and Budget Committees.

A former Air Force prosecutor, Graham began his political career in the early 90s after working as a city and county attorney in South Carolina.

He briefly ran for president in 2015 and, despite early criticism, became one of Donald Trump’s closest allies and most outspoken advocates.

President Trump paid tribute, calling him “a true American Patriot” who “will be greatly missed.”

Graham’s family has asked for privacy and prayers during this difficult time.

No further details about his illness have been disclosed.
