In recent weeks, Ghana has organized special repatriation flights for its citizens living in South Africa amidst rising xenophobic tensions. On Wednesday, the first group of 300 Ghanaians boarded a flight from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg to Accra. This initiative is part of a larger effort to repatriate approximately 800 Ghanaians in total.

The repatriation process has not been without its challenges. A South African immigration official noted that only 10 of the Ghanaians on the flight were in the country legally, indicating widespread non-compliance with immigration laws. Moreover, more Ghanaians arrived at the airport than were on the registered list, complicating logistics.

Ghana has pledged to provide comprehensive support to the returnees, including financial, psychological, and social assistance, ensuring a smoother transition back home.

The repatriation efforts come amid escalating anti-immigration protests in South Africa, driven by economic challenges such as high unemployment rates exceeding 30%. These protests have sparked violence in major cities like Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Durban.

The Ghanaian community has been particularly alarmed following the circulation of a viral video depicting an attack on Emmanuel Asamoah, a Ghanaian resident in South Africa. In response to these ongoing issues, Ghana summoned South Africa's top envoy to address the xenophobic attacks on its nationals and other Africans living there.
