The Ghanaian government has begun preparations to assist citizens seeking to leave South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals. According to Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Anani Quashie, more than 200 Ghanaians have already requested voluntary repatriation.
Speaking on PM Express, the High Commissioner revealed that the government is ready to support affected citizens by covering transportation expenses and processing emergency travel documents for those without valid passports. The initiative is aimed at ensuring the safe and dignified return of Ghanaians caught up in the growing tensions.
The development comes shortly after the return of Emmanuel Akowuah Asamoah, whose image circulated widely online during the unrest. Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that he was successfully brought back home earlier this month with state assistance.
Authorities say the safety and welfare of Ghanaian citizens abroad remain a top priority as concerns continue to rise over recurring xenophobic violence in South Africa. Ghanaian officials are also urging citizens in affected areas to remain calm, avoid dangerous zones, and stay in contact with diplomatic representatives for support and guidance.
