Ghanaian musician and NDC supporter Mzbel has said she no longer wants to have anything to do with the ruling NDC government, recalling how she has missed several opportunities and what an unnamed NPP big woman did to her.
Speaking to Kafui Dey, Mzbel said she no longer wants to be associated with any political party because of the personal and professional difficulties she says her political involvement has caused her.
“I loved NDC. It doesn't mean I hate NDC now, but I don't want to have anything to do with any political party anymore. It has caused me more harm than good,” she said.
Mzbel said her open support for the NDC affected some of her opportunities, including performances organised outside Ghana.
She recalled an occasion when she was removed from a show shortly before the event because of the political affiliation of the guest of honour.
“A few days to the show, they called me that their guest of honour is one big NPP woman and because of her, they have to take me off the show,” she said.
According to Mzbel, some organisers also cancelled international performance opportunities after promotional flyers featuring her had already been published.
She believes her career would have been different if she had not publicly declared her political allegiance.
“So if I didn't come out to say that I am NDC, defending my party and all of that, I would have been doing well. I lost half of my fan base,” she said.
Mzbel also said her political affiliation exposed her to attacks from people she associated with the NDC.
“And the party I followed too, well, it didn't do me any good,” she said.
She alleged that some people within the party attacked and insulted her, threatened her and criticised her publicly on social media.
“You know, because there are people in the party who physically and verbally attacked me, insulted me, called me out on social media, threatened to beat me, and all of that,” she said.
Mzbel said the treatment also affected how potential collaborators and event organisers could perceive her.
“So if these same people are NDC people and they are doing this to me on social media, I mean, why would anybody want to work with me?” she asked.
