Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confirmed that the government has initiated urgent diplomatic engagements with authorities in South Africa following disturbing viral videos depicting xenophobic attacks on Ghanaians.

According to the Minister, the swift intervention by Ghanaian officials was aimed at ensuring the safety of citizens and seeking clarity on the incidents circulating online. He revealed that the South African government has responded with concern, expressing empathy for the victims and assuring Ghana of a thorough and transparent investigation into the matter.

Mr. Ablakwa further emphasized that, based on current reports, no Ghanaian fatalities have been recorded in connection with the attacks. He described this as a relief but noted that the situation remains under close monitoring.

The Foreign Affairs Minister also urged the Ghanaian public to remain calm and avoid spreading panic, assuring that the government is actively engaging its South African counterparts to safeguard the welfare of Ghanaians living abroad.

The development has once again brought attention to recurring tensions involving foreign nationals in South Africa, with calls for stronger protections and sustained diplomatic cooperation to prevent future occurrences.
