DR Congo Secures World Cup Spot with Victory Over Jamaica

In a thrilling intercontinental playoff final, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) secured their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 by defeating Jamaica 1-0. The decisive match, held at Estadio Guadalajara, saw former Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe score the only goal in extra time, sending the Congolese fans into jubilation.

Tuanzebe's Heroic Moment.]

Axel Tuanzebe, currently playing for Burnley in the English Premier League, became the hero for DRC as he netted the crucial goal in the 100th minute. The goal, which came from a corner, was initially under scrutiny for a potential handball but was eventually confirmed, much to the relief of the Congolese team and supporters.

Reflecting on his achievement, Tuanzebe expressed his delight: “To score the winning goal for your country… This is what every player dreams of. I am so proud of what I could do for the country, I’m so proud of the country, and now it is time to celebrate.”

A Deserved Victory.

The match was characterized by a fast-paced, dynamic flow, with DRC showing dominance throughout, despite the lack of clear-cut chances. Their perseverance paid off as they emerged victorious, earning a place in the prestigious tournament. The victory is especially significant as it marks only the second time DRC will appear in the World Cup finals, the first being in 1974 when they competed as Zaire.

Path to the Playoff.

To reach this stage, the DRC overcame Nigeria in a playoff at the end of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) qualifiers. Jamaica, on their part, had defeated New Caledonia earlier to make it to the intercontinental playoff final.

Looking Ahead to the World Cup.

With this win, the DRC joins nine other African nations in the 2026 World Cup, reinforcing the continent's growing presence in international football. They have been placed in a group alongside Portugal, Colombia, and Uzbekistan, with their opening match against Portugal.

The Final Spot.

The last available spot for the World Cup will be determined in the upcoming intercontinental final between Iraq and Bolivia. The match, scheduled for later on Tuesday, will conclude the lineup for the tournament.

As the DRC celebrates their historic achievement, they prepare to take on some of the world's best teams on the grand stage, representing not just their nation but the hopes of an entire continent.
