The Democratic Republic of Congo has urged FIFA to refund World Cup tickets bought by supporters who are now unable to travel to the United States because of Ebola-related entry restrictions.
The issue has caused major disappointment among Congolese football fans, especially with the country preparing for a long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup. Many supporters had already secured match tickets and travel plans months ahead of the tournament, hoping to follow the national team on football’s biggest stage.
However, recent health measures linked to Ebola concerns have complicated travel for people coming from affected regions. While teams and official tournament personnel are expected to receive special clearance, thousands of ordinary fans may not be allowed to enter the U.S.
Congolese football authorities believe supporters should not suffer financial losses due to circumstances beyond their control. The federation is therefore asking FIFA to provide refunds for tickets purchased by affected fans or find an alternative solution.
The situation has also raised questions about how global sporting events handle sudden health emergencies and international travel restrictions. Some supporters are now exploring the possibility of attending matches hosted in other World Cup venues outside the United States.
FIFA has yet to make a final decision, but the request from DR Congo is expected to spark discussions over fan rights and tournament accessibility ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
