Cyberattacks on Swiss Critical Infrastructure

In a concerning development, the Swiss government has been grappling with a significant number of cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure. During the past year, the Federal Office for Cybersecurity reported receiving 325 notifications of such attacks, reflecting an alarming rate of nearly one attack per day.

Reporting Mandate.

As of April 1, 2025, operators of critical infrastructure in Switzerland are legally required to report any cyberattacks within 24 hours. This mandate aims to ensure prompt and effective responses to cyber threats. The recent figures were disclosed in the Federal Office for Cybersecurity's report covering the second half of 2025.

Sector-Specific Impact.

The administrative sector bore the brunt of these attacks, contributing to roughly a quarter of the incidents reported. Following closely were IT and telecommunications firms, along with financial institutions such as banks and insurance companies. This distribution highlights the broad range of sectors vulnerable to cyber threats.

Types of Attacks.

  1. Hacking: Approximately 20% of the reported attacks involved some form of hacking.
  2. DDoS Attacks: These accounted for 16% of the incidents, disrupting services by overwhelming systems with traffic.
  3. Other Threats: The remaining attacks comprised theft of access data, malware infections, data leaks, and ransomware.

Voluntary Reporting.

In addition to mandatory reports, tens of thousands of cyber incidents were reported voluntarily, predominantly by private individuals. This proactive approach by citizens underscores a growing awareness and concern over cybersecurity issues.

Overall Cybersecurity Landscape.

In 2025, the Federal Office for Cybersecurity registered nearly 65,000 reports of cyber incidents, showing a stable yet high level compared to the 63,000 reports received the previous year. These figures emphasize the ongoing challenges faced by Switzerland in safeguarding its critical infrastructure from cyber threats.

The Swiss government's efforts to combat these threats through legal requirements and public awareness campaigns are crucial steps in fortifying the country's cybersecurity defenses. As cyber threats continue to evolve, continuous vigilance and adaptation will be essential to protect vital national assets.
