Catholic Bishops engages Minority Leadership in Parliament over national issues

On Friday, May 8, 2026, the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC), at the request of the Minority Caucus in Parliament, granted an audience to a delegation of the Minority Leadership led by Hon. Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader in Parliament, during the Conference’s Plenary Assembly to discuss matters of national concern relating to governance, democratic accountability, social cohesion, and the general welfare of the Ghanaian people.

The engagement formed part of the Conference’s longstanding commitment to constructive dialogue with state institutions and key actors within Ghana’s democratic architecture. The Minority Leadership expressed appreciation to the Bishops for the opportunity to engage in frank and reflective conversation on issues they considered critical to the health of the nation’s constitutional democracy.

Discussions focused broadly on concerns relating to legislative practice, the administration of justice, institutional independence, constitutional governance, social policy, and the management of national resources.

The Bishops reiterated the Church’s enduring commitment to the common good, ethical public life, and the deepening of Ghana’s democratic culture. The Conference emphasized the need for leadership rooted in integrity, patriotism, dialogue, and service to the people, while cautioning against political polarization, vindictiveness, and governance practices that weaken public trust in national institutions.

The Bishops further stressed that the Church remains ready to speak responsibly on issues affecting society, particularly where truth, justice, peace, and human dignity are at stake. In this regard, the Conference encouraged continued engagement among political actors and urged all stakeholders to place the long-term stability and moral health of the nation above transient political advantage.

The meeting was held in a cordial and reflective atmosphere, with both parties affirming the importance of sustained dialogue in the collective pursuit of national cohesion, accountable governance, and the flourishing of Ghana’s democratic project.
