Cape Verde is mourning after a bus crash on the island of Fogo claimed at least 25 lives, many of them children and teenagers.
The tragedy happened as the bus was returning to São Filipe after an excursion to Chã das Caldeiras, a village located inside the volcanic crater of Pico do Fogo.
There were 32 people on board.
According to local authorities, the bus veered off the mountainous road and plunged about 30 metres into a rocky ravine.
The crash happened in an area that was difficult for rescue teams to reach.
Emergency workers spent hours trying to rescue people from the wreckage.
Several people survived but were injured. Some were reported to be in serious condition.
The bus driver was also among those who died. Reports say he had organised the annual excursion for the children as a special trip before the new school year.
