Egypt Imposes Business Curfew to Counter Soaring Fuel Costs

Egypt has announced a new curfew for shops, restaurants, and shopping malls, requiring them to close by 9:00 pm starting Saturday. This decision comes as the nation grapples with skyrocketing energy bills, which have surged due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

Details of the Curfew

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly detailed the curfew, stating it will initially last for a month. Businesses will be required to close at 9:00 pm on weekdays. However, they are permitted to extend their hours until 10:00 pm on Thursdays and Fridays, which are considered the weekend in Egypt. This measure is aimed at reducing energy consumption during peak hours, thus alleviating the financial strain from the increased energy costs.

Economic Impact

The Prime Minister highlighted the dire economic impact of the conflict, noting that Egypt's monthly energy expenditure has nearly tripled, rising from $560 million to $1.650 billion. He emphasized the need for Cairo to prepare for the worst-case scenario as the conflict’s outcome remains uncertain.

Tourism Considerations

Despite the new restrictions, Tourism Minister Sherif Fathy assured that tourists and key destinations would not be affected. This reassurance aims to maintain the flow of international visitors, which remains a crucial source of revenue for Egypt.

Fuel Price Hikes and Trade Disruptions

At the beginning of March, Egypt was compelled to increase fuel prices by over 30 percent. This was a consequence of strikes on regional oil infrastructure and threats to the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route severely impacted by the conflict. The situation has not only driven up global oil prices but also disrupted trade routes, most notably affecting the Suez Canal. This canal is a significant source of foreign currency for Egypt, and its partial rerouting further exacerbates the country's economic challenges.

In summary, Egypt's curfew is a strategic move to manage its escalating energy costs amidst international turmoil. The government remains vigilant, adapting to unforeseen challenges while striving to protect both its economy and its citizens.
