In a series of coordinated attacks on Friday, armed men targeted three villages and a mosque in Nigeria’s central Niger State, leading to the abduction of numerous worshippers. According to police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun, the assailants initiated their assault on the villages of Gidan-Zana and Kpenya before moving to the mosque.

Jibril Ahmad, a survivor from Dekara, attributed the attack to the Lakurawa armed group, stating they descended upon the village shortly after Friday prayers. Ahmad described the attackers’ violent actions, claiming that some individuals were “slaughtered.” The Lakurawa group’s motives remain unclear, but their actions have caused widespread fear and disruption in the community.

Intervention and Resistance.

During the assault, a separate group known as Mahmuda reportedly intervened, clashing with the kidnappers and enabling some of the abducted individuals to escape. Federal lawmaker Jafaru Mohammed confirmed that members of the Mahmuda group opposed the Lakurawa’s ideology and actively resisted their actions, which helped mitigate the impact of the attack.

Response from Authorities.

The Nigerian police, alongside a joint security detachment, have been deployed to the affected areas to assess the situation and conduct rescue operations. While the exact number of kidnapped individuals is yet to be confirmed, local residents suggest that over 60 worshippers were taken.
