Ethiopian Police Dismantle Major Human Trafficking Ring
In a significant breakthrough against human trafficking, Ethiopian police have successfully dismantled a dangerous international trafficking network responsible for the suffering of over 3,000 victims. The arrest of a leading trafficker and nine accomplices marks a pivotal moment in the fight against this heinous crime.
Details of the Arrest.
The Ethiopian police, in a statement released on Facebook, revealed the capture of a notorious trafficker along with nine others accused of smuggling thousands of individuals to Libya. Once in Libya, these victims faced unimaginable horrors, including being held hostage, tortured, raped, or even killed.
Operation and Modus Operandi.
This human trafficking network, operational since 2018, preyed on the aspirations of young individuals from various countries including Ethiopia, Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, Kenya, and Somalia. Many of these individuals harbored dreams of reaching Europe, only to find themselves trapped in Libya instead.
The traffickers maintained five warehouses in Libya where they held their victims hostage. Families of the victims were extorted for large ransoms, under threats of violence or death to their loved ones. Those unable to pay faced dire conditions—receiving only one meagre meal a day and subjected to brutal beatings, whippings, and chaining.
Horrific Conditions and Crimes.
The accounts shared by police paint a grim picture of the atrocities committed. Victims were subjected to burning with plastic water bottles, women suffered sexual violence, and many endured fatal torture. The trafficking ring's actions resulted in the deaths of over 100 individuals and the rape of more than 50 women.
Investigation and Outcomes.
The investigation, supported by Project ROCK—an EU-funded Interpol initiative—has been thorough and extensive. Interviews with over 100 victims and their families provided critical insights into the network’s operations, revealing that they moved approximately $20 million through their illicit activities.
The police further disclosed that the investigation uncovered more than 70 significant human traffickers operating within Ethiopia and internationally.
Moving Forward.
The arrest and dismantling of this trafficking ring highlight the ongoing commitment of Ethiopian authorities to combat human trafficking. It underscores the importance of international cooperation and support in addressing such complex and transnational crimes. The courage and resilience of the victims, along with the tireless efforts of law enforcement, have been crucial in bringing this criminal network to justice.
