A heartbreaking incident has struck the Central Region after a 23-year-old hairdressing apprentice, identified as Hajia Hawa, reportedly went missing after being swept away by floodwaters during a heavy rainstorm in Swedru.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred on Friday, May 22, near the Swedru Mandela Market when the young woman allegedly slipped into a large drainage channel during the downpour.
Family members say Hajia Hawa, believed to be the youngest child in her family, had gone on an errand to purchase wigs from a nearby supermarket when disaster struck.
Her elder sister, Hadiya Mustapha, explained that the fast-rising floodwaters quickly swept her away before help could reach her.
Following the incident, community leaders and members of the Swedru Asafo Company reportedly launched an intensive search operation to locate her.
However, despite three days of searching, she still remains missing.
Residents suspect the strong floodwaters may have carried her into the overflowing Akora River, making rescue efforts even more difficult.
The unfortunate incident has sparked concern among many Ghanaians, especially as flooding continues to pose serious dangers in several parts of the country during the rainy season.
Her family has expressed appreciation to volunteers, community members, and search teams who have continued to support them during this difficult period.
