The Metropolitan Police in London are currently investigating a series of arson attacks on Jewish sites, exploring the possibility that these incidents are the work of Iranian proxies. This development comes amid concerns from British Jewish leaders about a campaign of violence and intimidation against their community.

Investigation Details

Counterterrorism officers are looking into fires at synagogues and other Jewish community sites, as well as an attack on a Persian-language media company. Although no injuries have been reported, the latest incident caused minor damage to a synagogue in north London. A group calling itself Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia has claimed responsibility for these attacks online.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans commented on the potential Iranian links, stating that the investigation will continue to explore connections to Iran, given the regime's history of using criminal proxies. The group has also claimed responsibility for similar attacks in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Community and Government Response

The Metropolitan Police have increased both uniformed and plainclothes patrols in northwest London following recent attacks, including the torching of four ambulances belonging to a Jewish charity in Golders Green. Several individuals have been arrested and charged in connection with these incidents.

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis expressed his concerns on social media, describing the situation as a "sustained campaign of violence and intimidation" against the U.K.'s Jewish community. He emphasized the danger of the current moment and the need for action before lives are lost.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attacks, reassuring the public that those responsible will be found and brought to justice. He stressed that attacks on the Jewish community are tantamount to attacks on Britain itself.

The U.K. government has accused Iran of using criminal proxies to target opposition media outlets and the Jewish community in Europe. MI5 reports that over 20 potentially lethal Iran-backed plots were disrupted in the past year.
