Tragic School Fire in Kenya: Parents Await Official Identification..
Parents of students at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, central Kenya, are enduring an agonizing wait for news about their children following a devastating fire that swept through a dormitory. The suspected arson attack claimed the lives of 16 pupils, leaving families desperate for information and closure.
Heartbreaking Uncertainty.
Since the incident occurred early Thursday morning, anguished parents have gathered at the school, hoping for answers. The fire ripped through the upper floor of the dormitory, which housed 135 bunk beds, creating a scene of chaos and confusion. Parents, like John Muiruri, father of 13-year-old Nicole Muiriri, expressed their frustration with the lack of clear communication from authorities. "They tell us the children are in Kenyatta University hospital in Nairobi, other times they say they are in Naivasha," he lamented.
Identification Process Underway.
The bodies of the victims were transported to a government hospital morgue, where DNA testing is being conducted to confirm their identities.
As Joyce Ncece, Nakuru County's chief officer for disaster management, explained, "The bodies can't be identified by just looking at them, because of the burns and that's why we are doing DNA." Forensic experts began collecting DNA samples from the grieving parents on Friday, hoping to bring some measure of resolution to the devastated families.
Investigation and Legal Actions.
In addition to the tragic deaths, the fire left 79 others injured. Authorities have arrested eight students suspected of orchestrating the blaze, although the motive behind the attack remains unclear. DCI spokesperson John Marete indicated that investigators are conducting thorough interviews and reviewing CCTV footage to uncover the truth.
Accountability and Safety Concerns.
Education Minister Julius Ogamba announced that the school's board of management has been dissolved, and the principal will face disciplinary measures for safety violations. "There was congestion in the dormitory and one exit door was locked, contrary to the prescribed safety requirements," Ogamba stated. Two teachers, aware of potential unrest, will also face consequences.
A History of School Fires.
School fires are a persistent issue in East Africa, where overcrowded classrooms and dormitories often lack firefighting equipment. While some fires result from electrical faults, others are deliberately set by students as a form of protest against disciplinary actions. This tragic event highlights the urgent need for improved safety measures and effective crisis management in schools across the region.
