Russia Announces Nuclear-Capable Missile Tests Ahead of Victory Day Parade

Russia has announced a new round of missile tests involving nuclear-capable systems ahead of its annual Victory Day celebrations, a move widely interpreted as a warning to Ukraine against launching any attacks during the commemorations. The tests are scheduled to take place at the Kura test range in the Ust-Kamchatka region, one of Russia’s key military testing grounds.

According to Russian authorities, the exercises will involve strategic missile systems capable of carrying nuclear warheads. These reportedly include intercontinental ballistic missiles such as the Yars, Bulava, and Sineva systems, which are commonly used in Russian military drills and re-entry testing operations.

The Kamchatka Krai Ministry of Emergency Situations, together with Russia’s Defense Ministry, issued strict safety warnings ahead of the exercises. Civilians, vehicles, aircraft, and maritime traffic have been barred from entering the designated testing zones during the operation period.

The announcement comes amid heightened tensions surrounding Russia’s Victory Day parade in Moscow, one of the country’s most symbolic military events. Russian officials reportedly warned that any Ukrainian drone or missile strike targeting the celebrations would provoke what they described as a “massive retaliatory missile strike” on central Kyiv, including strategic government and command locations.

Reports also indicate that foreign embassies in Kyiv were advised to consider evacuating personnel due to fears of possible escalation around the holiday period.

Victory Day, celebrated annually on May 9, marks the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II and has become a major display of Russian military power and national pride. This year’s celebrations are taking place under the shadow of the ongoing war in Ukraine and increasing concerns over further escalation between the two sides.
