Nigerian Army Intensifies Offensive, Dismantles IPOB/ESN Strongholds and Recovers Explosives

April 15, 2026 • 2 min read

The Nigerian Army has ramped up its ongoing offensive operations in the South-East, delivering significant blows to strongholds linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network. Under Operation Eastern Sanity, troops have continued to assert dominance across key locations, forcing militant elements into retreat and weakening their operational structure.

On April 14, 2026, a coordinated assault involving ground troops and air support targeted insurgent positions within Ajali Forest in Enugu State. The operation, backed by the Air Component of Operation UDO KA, resulted in a rapid breakthrough as fighters fled under pressure, abandoning critical equipment. Among the items recovered was a dangerous anti-tank Improvised Explosive Device (IED), which was safely secured by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team before it could be deployed.

Military authorities say the failed deployment of such a device highlights growing desperation among the group, as well as a decline in its technical and operational capabilities. Troops have since tightened control over the area, carrying out sustained clearance missions and destroying hideouts to prevent regrouping.

In a parallel operation, soldiers attached to the 82 Division Garrison in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area acted on intelligence provided by the Department of State Services. The mission led to the arrest of a suspected kidnapper believed to be part of a broader criminal network. Security forces recovered a pump-action rifle and ₦2 million, suspected to be ransom proceeds, during the raid.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect and seized items have been handed over for further investigation, with efforts underway to track down other members of the syndicate. Officials noted that such operations are not only disrupting militant activities but also cutting off financial lifelines that sustain them.

The Nigerian Army has reiterated its commitment to eliminating all insurgent and criminal threats in the region. It assured residents of continued protection and called for public cooperation as efforts intensify to restore peace and stability across the South-East.
