Mozambique blocks over 5,000 South African trucks amid exnophobic attacks
Mozambican authorities and local transport groups have reportedly restricted movement of more than 5,000 South African cargo trucks, following protests and road blockades at key border points, including the Lebombo/Ressano Garcia crossing.
The disruptions are being led mainly by youth and transport operators responding to rising tensions linked to attacks on Mozambican nationals and vehicles in parts of South Africa.
The actions are described as retaliatory, with some groups blocking South African-registered trucks while allowing others through.
Protesters have also raised broader demands, including reviewing regional trade and energy arrangements.
The situation has slowed traffic along the Maputo Development Corridor, causing delays in supply chains and financial losses for transport operators.
