EMPD Deputy Chief Arrested in Expanding Corruption Probe

April 18, 2026 • 2 min read

Suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi has been arrested in a dramatic development that deepens the ongoing investigation into alleged corruption within the metro police.

Mkhwanazi was taken into custody at his Gauteng residence on Saturday morning by a specialized police task team linked to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. He now faces a series of serious charges, including fraud, corruption, and defeating or obstructing the course of justice.

His arrest follows days of intense scrutiny during his testimony before the commission, where probing questions centered on his alleged role in irregular activities within the EMPD. The commission has been examining claims of misconduct, abuse of authority, and questionable operational decisions tied to senior officials.

The embattled officer had already been suspended in November 2025 after internal investigations and evidence presented to the commission raised red flags. Among the allegations are claims that he engaged in irregular agreements, authorized questionable promotions, and facilitated operations beyond the legal scope of the EMPD. Investigators have also pointed to his alleged links with businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and a private security firm, adding another layer of concern to the case.

During his testimony, Mkhwanazi denied multiple accusations, even as investigators presented what they described as compelling evidence, including digital communication records. His responses, at times, appeared to contradict material before the commission, intensifying suspicions around his conduct.

Authorities say the investigation is far from over. Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed that efforts are ongoing to identify additional individuals who may be implicated in the unfolding scandal.

Mkhwanazi, 50, is expected to make his first court appearance soon, where the details of the charges against him are likely to be formally outlined.

Meanwhile, the Madlanga Commission continues its broader probe into systemic challenges within law enforcement structures in Ekurhuleni. The arrest of such a high-ranking official signals a significant moment in the inquiry, highlighting the scale and seriousness of the issues under investigation.

More information is expected as legal proceedings begin and the case develops further.
