China builds 240-metre bridge meant for use by wild animals
China built a 240-metre bridge that cars and people are not meant to use.
It was built for wild animals.
The bridge crosses the new Pinglu Canal in Guangxi, where construction had divided existing wildlife habitat.
So instead of leaving animals with no safe route across, engineers built a dedicated ecological corridor.
The bridge is around 20 metres wide and covered with local soil, trees, shrubs and other native plants.
It even includes food-producing vegetation such as figs, loquats and berry plants to make the crossing feel more like natural habitat.
Rocks, logs and sheltered areas were added too.
Animals including leopard cats, spotted linsangs and red-bellied squirrels are expected to use it.
It has been described as China’s first dedicated wildlife bridge across a major canal.
Most bridges are built to help humans get somewhere faster.
This one was built so wildlife would not lose the path it had always used.
